Search My Heart O God

Psalm 139:23, 24- "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." David is praying and asking the Lord to search his heart and reveal any hidden or secret sins so that he could confess them and be right with God. So many times our thoughts get us into trouble. It isn't a sin to have a bad thought, but when we mull it over, talk about it, it eventually turns into a sinful act. We must stop sinful thoughts where they start- in the mind. That is where the battle is either won or lost! But God has not left us defenseless against our flesh.

The Word of God is our sure defense. Hebrews 4:12 says"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." When we read the Word with an open heart and with the Spirit-it goes right to the quick. It does its job if we let it. But we have to first put the Word inside of us and allow the Spirit to reveal to us those things that are not pleasing to God.

When we find that our thoughts are not right before God, 2 Corinthians 10:4,5 tells us about our weapons- they are not fleshly, but mighty in God "For pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing into captivity to the obedience of Christ," We must take our thoughts and bring them into captivity. We must not allow the enemy to encamp in our thoughts and our minds. Sometimes he builds up strongholds in our minds. But God is mighty!!! He doesn't leave us defenseless. He gives us the Word and the Spirit to fight those spiritual battles.

Allow the Lord to search your heart today. Be real before God. He already knows what we are all about. Talk to Him about. Allow the Word to get inside and route out any sinful thoughts and replace them with godly thoughts. Philippians 4:8 tells us the kind of things we should think about-- true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report-- these are the kind of things we should have on our minds. If you are having trouble with your thought life, ask the Lord to help you, allow Him to search your heart so you, like David, can be lead in the everlasting way.
