DON'T BE ANXIOUS-A LESSON FROM OUR DOG

I frequently learn spiritual lessons from our 10 year old Golden Retriever Ginger. Recently my husband and I were getting ready go away for the weekend. Our dog loves to travel and even though she was only going to be dropped off at the kennel- still she DID NOT want to be left behind! The night before we started getting our suitcases ready and all the things we were taking with us. She always becomes so anxious when she sees all this activity going on. On the morning that we were leaving my husband was packing the car and Ginger was just beside herself. Every time I went upstairs to get something she followed me, panting and pacing. Every time my husband went outside she wanted outside with him. Then she wanted back in, just panting as only dogs can do- and pacing and being so anxious. You would think that after 10 years she would have learned that we have never left her alone while we have gone away. But she couldn't keep us out of her sight and she was pacing all over the place. Every few minutes I would look at her and say- "It's OK Ginger. We will take you with us" and I would pat her on the head or scratch her ear. But she just didn't get it! She couldn't rest in the fact that we have never left her alone.

She wasn't speaking our language! We couldn't convey to her that everything was going to be OK. She wasn't trusting all those years of us not leaving her by herself. As I watched her I realized that we act the same way with God sometimes. We get so beside ourselves, so anxious over things. We know something is going on but we just can't seem to trust God's character and how He has taken care of us in the past. We pace and fret and worry. We don't speak His language! We are in such a panic and we can't understand what He is trying to say to us-- "It's OK. I won't leave you alone."

The way to understand God's language is His word. We must read it, study it, memorize it and activate it in our lives. We must trust how God worked in the past for us. We must rest in that.

Psalm 46: 10 says "Be still and know that I am God.". Philippians 4:6 says: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.". Now of course an animal can't pray- but us humans certainly can! And we can read and get His word- His language-- into our hearts. Hebrews 4:12 states that the word of God "is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.." It is alive! It isn't some dead letter written hundreds of years ago that mean nothing today. No! It is alive and will become active in our spirits if we let it. It is powerful! It is God's language to us. It is how He communicates and lets us know that everything is all right and He will take care of us.

Ginger only became settled when both of us were in the car and heading down the street. Then she was able to rest- but before that she was a nervous wreck! How many today are nervous wrecks because they have not allowed God to speak to them through His word and trust His character?

Be still and know that He is God! Rest in those words- take heart in those words- for they are alive and powerful still today.
