The Mystery of Quietness

"And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35

 

Quietness. Can you hear it? The miraculous in the stillness. God works in the quiet, in the stillness, in the small whispers and deep thoughts. Roots grow deep in the quiet of winter. They find water and nourishment deep in the soil.  The miraculous is taking place. Something seems to appear dead- but in the darkness, in the quietness and stillness of the earth- a miracle is taking place, hidden from the human eye. The miracle of new beginnings, new life. 

It isn't in the earthquake- the loud and boisterous. It isn't in the fire-of personalities. It isn't in the flood- the flurry of activity and fleshly emotions-- but it is in the still, quietness of the mystery of God in Christ- the incarnate- virgin birth. 

Jesus Christ- first conceived in the warm, dark quiet of a womb prepared for birth, a seed, the miraculous is planted by Spirit-breath, Spirit-wind. It contains all it will ever be in the natural- and the spirit. Hidden from the human eye to be manifested in God's time. Spiritual DNA passed down from the Father to produce a being after His own image- to fulfill His plan. Birthed in a cold, dark place. Hidden from human eye except for His parents. No bright lights. No fanfare. No cameras or videos. No glitter or gold. No  earthquake, wind or fire to proclaim His initial, miraculous appearing. 

Another birth- the miraculous- conceived in the warm, dark quiet of a spiritual womb prepared for birth- a seed- the miraculous, planted by Spirit-breath,  Spirit-wind. Those who see without human eyes and hear without human ears- but see and hear with their spiritual hearts prepared for their new birth- emerge into the image of their Father- to fulfill their Father's plan on earth. Our hearts-quiet, still- who believe and receive the Spirit of our Father, reborn- into the darkness of a world in sin- to bring Light into that darkness, to bring Life out of death- and to proclaim the goodness of God to a world, to open the eyes and ears of the spiritually blind and death. The good news of Jesus Christ- the Savior of the world- to those who would believe.

Quietness   Mystery  Stillness  Never dismiss the whispers of God or you may miss the fulfillment of the mystery. 


Dear Lord- thank You so much for the Gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, sent to save us from sin. May our hearts stay open to Your Spirit, to hear Your whispers, Your gentle nudges, and soft voice, leading us in our lives. Help us to avoid the mad rush of the world and take the path less traveled, but traveled by those who are led by Your Spirit. May our hearts, our wombs, be prepared, for new births- new visions and new revelations in the days to come-to be part of that great mystery, the revelation of Jesus Christ into the world. In Christ's name, Amen.

A Sweet Fragrance

  "Awake, north wind! Rise up, south wind! Blow on my garden and spread its fragrance all around. Come into your garden, my love; taste its finest fruits"  Song of Solomon 4:16 (N LT) I am having spring fever! "F or lo, the winter is past---the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land." (S/S 2:11-12 ) At least in my mind and my heart. Yes, I know- "Three snows after the forsythia blooms"- the old saying- and then comes spring. But in my heart, the forsythia is blooming now, and as for me we don't need anymore snow or cold.  I was reading this verse in Spurgeon's Devotional this morning- and it really set me thinking. The book of the Song of Solomon is a love story of the Church and Christ as depicted by a Shulamite woman betrothed to the Shepherd-King. The Crimson Cross

"But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people" Psalm 22:6  When Jesus died on the cross, His blood was shed for the remission of our sin. He was the One and Only Supreme Sacrifice. That cross and the ground surrounding it must have had an eerie scarlet, crimson shade. As blood poured out of His body, onto the cross and onto the ground, it was to fulfill prophecy and to secure redemption for broken, sinful humanity- to all who will accept it. Psalm 22 was written by King David about 1,000 years before Christ was crucified, but it is a prophetic detail of what Christ endured on the cross.  The word "worm" is the Hebrew word "tola" . It describes a scarlet or grub worm. When the female of the species would give birth, she attached herself to a tree trunk, permanently, never to leave again.
