“Behold! The Lamb of God”
“ In the same region, there were some shepherds, staying out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night” Luke 2:8
The angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to the lowly shepherds out in the field, watching over the flocks. The angel of the Lord appeared to these shepherds who were watching, tending to the flock, especially those ewes that may be giving birth in the spring, possibly to be used as Passover lambs. Just a short distance away, the Lamb of God-our Passover Lamb- was born in a stable.
John the Baptist, when he saw Jesus approaching to be baptized, said: "Behold! The Lamb of God.." That word "behold" means: to pay attention, observe, to experience, discover". We, as the lovers of God, should be beholding the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. We need to be focused on, to see with our mind's eye and to pay attention to Him. In doing this, our hearts and our minds are set on the Lord and other things fall by the wayside. When we focus on the Lord, the Lamb of God, God will begin to reveal His truths to us. He will open up scripture to our spirits and will begin to manifest Himself to our spirits in ways that we cannot perceive at the present time.
I can just imagine those shepherds when they laid eyes on Jesus, that they were "beholding" Him- in awe and wonder. To think how the angels had appeared to them and told them -them- just lowly shepherds out in the field doing their job. I am sure their lives were never the same and in the spring when their ewes gave birth- it must have brought a whole new meaning to them. They were probably still "beholding" the Lamb of God.
As this year comes to a close and a new year is upon us, let us set our hearts and our minds to behold the Lamb of God. He was our sacrifice, died for our sin, rose again, and sent His spirit to live inside of each one who will receive. Let us determine to make it a priority in our life to turn our spiritual eyes and mind to the Lamb of God.As those shepherds were tending to their flocks, God sent them the great and marvelous news of the birth of a savior Jesus Christ. As we look to Lamb, behold Him on a daily basis- and make Him a priority in our lives- and embrace expectancy- there’s no telling the marvelous and miraculous things that God will reveal to us. Let's determine to dwell on the marvelous, the majesty and the miraculous of Christ's birth, His life on earth and His death, burial and resurrection- and His sending back the Holy Spirit so that He could truly fulfill the prophesy of Emmanuel-God with us and in us. Let's be sure to behold Him as we go about our daily routine but also to set aside specific quiet times of prayer and meditation over the Word of God. Let's determine to behold the Lamb of God which took away our sin!
"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" John 1:29
"for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and
lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every
tear from their eyes." Revelation 7:17
Dear Father, as this year is coming to a close and a new year is fast approaching, may we all set as a priority in our lives to behold the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. May we acknowledge Him in all of our ways, in all of our thoughts, all of our actions. May we have ever before us a vision of who Jesus Christ is. May we embrace expectancy to see the miraculous, to see the manifestations of your glorious works. In Jesus, lovely name, amen.
